GOVAN ROAD / GLASGOW1974COUNTRY ON THE CLYDE
FROM THE COUNTRY MUSIC SCRAPBOOK
Country on the Clyde.
Glasgow has a country story of its own. Founded by Alex Fleming, Glasgow’s Grand Ole Opry opened as a Country & Western club in 1974—a place for live bands, dancing and good company.
Before the country nights
The building became the Imperial Picture Hall in 1921, designed by William Beresford Inglis. The cinema closed in 1959 and the building later housed an Irish dancing club. The Opry’s history describes the old upper circle and projector area still visible inside: a little cinema history behind the country music.

THE ORIGINAL DIAL INN4 West Regent StreetGLASGOW · OPENED AUGUST 1973*
*Opening date recorded by Glasband 80.
A door off West Regent Street. Music downstairs. A record you could ask the DJ to play.
Dial Inn Studio takes its name from the Glasgow venue remembered fondly by our founder. These fragments of its history explain the feeling we want to carry forward.
01Down the stairsThe room behind the name+
Glasband 80 dates the Dial Inn’s opening to August 1973. It describes two entrances: the restaurant to the right, and a door on the left leading downstairs to the Swiss-themed Heidi Lounge.
The address had a life before and after the Dial Inn. Old Glasgow Pubs records earlier names including Wyper’s and the Four A Snack Bar, and illustrates Drummond’s in 1991.
02Dial a recordA telephone. A request. Your song.+
The name had a wonderfully literal connection to the music. A 1973 report reproduced by Old Glasgow Pubs describes telephones on the disco tables: customers could call DJ Tom Cotcher and request a record.
The same report describes organist Ken Flower and drummer Mike Scott backing the lounge entertainment.
03The bands rememberAfternoons, audiences and familiar faces+
Glasband 80 collects photographs and recollections of bands including The Dolphins, Shoot The Moon and the Henry Gorman Band. Musicians remember afternoon gigs, welcoming audiences and the particular pressure of playing to fellow performers.
These are personal recollections, rather than a complete programme of the venue’s history.
Familiar company. Unexpected records. A reason to stay a little longer.
Historical research and memories: Glasband 80 and John Gorevan’s Old Glasgow Pubs. Our frontage is an original imagined scene informed by the old entrance and our founder’s memory. Dial Inn Studio is an independent software project.
